How to Help Men in Counseling Workshop
Date: November 12, 2016
Time: 9:00am - 3:30pm
5 Core Continuing Education Credits
Men are struggling with depression, suicide, changing roles and not being needed. According to Gurian (2011) oftentimes men feel when it comes to their mental health needs, people in the helping field are not as well equipped and educated to effectively help them.
When men enter counseling on their own accord, or due to someone or something which has required them to seek help, their experiences are usually different from that of female clients. Many men are socialized to avoid the core components of the therapeutic process: talking about feelings, disclosing vulnerability, the admission of dependency needs; all of which creates disconnect between the needs of men, their problems and effective male-specific treatment approaches to address their problems.
This five hour workshop will provide clinicians with the necessary skills and tools to effectively help men in counseling through exploring men’s difficulties within the therapeutic process. Strategies will be presented that examine how to form therapeutic relationships with male clients; assess the role of masculine socialization on presenting problems; how to work with male discomfort with emotions; and outline how to engage men in the process of caring for their mental health.
Outcome:
The goal of this workshop is to help participants understand evidence-based and cultural appropriate strategies and create better therapy relationships with their male clients.

-
Learn the mind of a man, such as how he processes information, emotions, and motivations and describe the “rules of masculinity” and its impact on men mental health
-
